A letter to myself this Valentine’s Day

Hello you,

It’s that time of year again when you can’t move for heart shaped things and kissing couples. The love songs are being played on the radio are a constant reminder that you’re alone, and if you’re not careful it’s easy to become lonely. It can feel like everyone’s matched up except for you; I’m here to tell you that’s not the case.

First of all, I want to remind you that you are far from alone. You have wonderful friends that always bring a smile to your face, and a family that support your decisions even if they don’t quite understand them. You might not have someone who is madly in love with you, but you have plenty of people who love you, don’t forget that.

Secondly, I love you and that is so important. How can you expect someone else to love you if you don’t love yourself? You are not perfect, you have flaws, but you also have great attributes and talents that make you who you are. You’ve come so far from who you used to be, do you realise that?  You’re confidence has grown. You put yourself out there and got a job. You work hard on your blog. I am so proud of you.

Yes, there are things about yourself that you wish you could change. Sometimes you have a hard time accepting yourself, but you’re working on it, and that counts for something. You can get caught up in wishing for your thighs to be thinner, skin to be softer, stretch marks to be less obvious, that you miss out the good bits.

Your eyes are a great shade of blue, surrounded by long curly eyelashes and framed by rather smart looking glasses. You’re laugh is certainly unique, but it brings smiles to other peoples’ faces and there’s no hiding the fact that in that moment you’re truly enjoying the moment. There’s lots of things to appreciate about your body, and even if you wish you could change things, it’s great the way it is. Don’t let anybody tell you differently or make you feel ashamed.

Remember that although society wants you to believe otherwise, valentines day is just another day.Treat yourself. Have a nice bubble bath and then spend a while painting your nails. Cuddle up in bed and watch a movie. Maybe you should take the opportunity to remind those closest to you how much they mean to you, because even though they know, it’s nice to be told sometimes. Enjoy today, because like any other day it’ll soon be over and you won’t get that time back.

I hope that every time you read this, you’re reminded that you are good enough and that you’re loved.

Happy Valentine’s Day
